How to Export Your Driving Log for the DMV

You’ve spent months logging practice hours. Dozens of sessions, day and night, rain and shine. Your totals finally hit the magic number. Now you need to prove it.

The DMV doesn’t care about your app. They care about documentation. A signed log, the right form, the right format. Show up without it and you’re making another trip.

What the DMV Actually Wants

Requirements vary by state, but most DMVs want some version of this:

  • A list of every supervised driving session
  • Date, start time, end time, and duration for each
  • Whether each session was day or night
  • The supervising driver’s name (and sometimes their license number)
  • A signature from the supervisor or parent

Some states have a specific form. Indiana has one. North Carolina has one. Others accept any log as long as it includes the right information.

The key point: you need a document. Not a screenshot of an app. Not a verbal “yeah I did the hours.” A real document you can hand over or upload.

State-Specific Forms

Moda generates the actual PDF form your state requires. Not a generic log that sort of looks right. The real form, filled in with your data.

Currently supported state forms:

  • Indiana
  • New Jersey
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania

If your state is on this list, Moda fills in the official form with your session data. Dates, times, durations, supervisor names, day/night classification. All pulled from the sessions you already logged. You just export and print.

More states are being added regularly.

What If Your State Isn’t Listed?

For states without a specific form template, Moda generates a clean summary document. It includes all the same information — every session, all your totals, supervisor details — just in a standard layout rather than a state-specific form.

This works fine for states that accept any reasonable log. It looks professional, the data is organized, and your totals are clearly displayed.

How to Export

The process takes about 30 seconds:

  1. Open Moda and go to the Export section from your dashboard.
  2. Choose your format: PDF (best for printing) or PNG (best for sharing digitally).
  3. Moda generates the document with all your session data.
  4. Share it however you need to.

Sharing options include AirDrop, Messages, email, or saving directly to your Files app. If your DMV accepts digital uploads, you can send the PDF straight from your phone. If they want paper, save to Files and print from your computer.

Why This Beats DIY

You could, in theory, take all your session data and manually fill in your state’s form. People do this. It takes forever. You’re copying dates and times from your phone to a PDF form, one row at a time, trying not to make transcription errors.

Or you could transfer everything to a spreadsheet first, format it, double-check the math, and print that. Also tedious. Also error-prone.

The whole point of tracking hours in an app is to avoid manual work. If you still have to manually create the final document, you’ve only solved half the problem.

Moda handles the last step too. Your sessions are already logged with accurate times, correct day/night classification, and supervisor info. The export just formats what already exists into what the DMV expects.

A Few Tips

Export early for a sanity check. You don’t have to wait until you’ve finished all your hours. Export a preview halfway through to make sure everything looks right. Check that supervisor names are spelled correctly and your night hours match what you expect.

Keep a backup. Save the exported PDF to your Files app or email it to yourself. If something happens to your phone before your DMV appointment, you’ll still have the document.

Double-check your state’s requirements. Some states want the supervisor to physically sign the form. A printed PDF with typed names might not be enough. In that case, print the form and get signatures in ink before your appointment.

When you’ve put in 50 or 60 hours of practice driving over the better part of a year, the last thing you want is paperwork problems at the finish line. Export it, check it, bring it. Done.
